Friday Night: Free Showing of The Cabin in the Woods

This coming Friday night (6/28), the Pikes Peak Writers (PPW) will be showing Josh Whedon’s crowd-pleasing The Cabin in the Woods for free! Renowned horror author and CU professor Stephen Graham Jones will be on hand to discuss this clever movie that manages to be both comic and horrific, as well as a “critical satire on torture porn” (don’t go to this Wikipedia page unless you want to spoil your viewing). Proceeds from candy and popcorn will be donated to the Black Forest Fire survivors though Tri-Lakes Cares. There will also be a silent auction to benefit the PPW Conference Scholarship Fund. Some of the items to be auctioned are mentioned here, but there are rumors of even more exciting items:

  • — A one-night stay for two at a gorgeous cabin in the woods
  • — A rare collectible item for Stephen King fans

The location will be the Business of Arts Center, Spencer Hall, 515 Manitou Avenue, Manitou Springs, CO. The date is friday, June 28th. The film will begin at 7:00 PM. Seating begins at 6:00 PM for those with RSVP’s, 6:30 PM for those without. To RSVP, email rsvp@pikespeakwriters.com (please include your name, telephone number, and the number of people accompanying you).

Saturday: Workshop by Stephen Graham Jones

On Saturday (6/29), Stephen Graham Jones will be presenting “Fear and Loathing in Any Genre: How to Pump Up the Intensity and Impact of Your Fiction by Scaring Your Reader.” This will be at the same location as the movie, the Business of Arts Center in Manitou (address above). The price of this five-hour workshop has been lowered to $25 and all proceeds will be going to Tri-Lakes Cares to help the Black Forest Fire survivors. An optional lunch can be added for $10. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m.

Register for the Saturday workshop at http://www.pikespeakwriters.com/html/events.html (scroll down until you see Saturday Full-Day Workshop). You can donate even if you can’t attend by scrolling down to the PayPal DONATE button, select “I can’t make it” and the amount you want to donate). A PDF flyer on both the movie night and the workshop can be found here.
